Are you prepared for handling the unexpected on the water? Basic knowledge of first aid and practice in handling common mishaps and unexpected situations can improve your confidence and your margin of safety. Whether you are First Aid certified or less experienced in handling injuries, this half-day session will allow you to develop and hone your practical knowledge and skills on the water.
North Star Adventures is offering a special day of training for members of SMSKN on July 14th! The 5-hour course is designed to develop and support practice of skills for basic first aid and common on-water emergencies. Depending on the backgrounds of participants, topics may include but are not limited to: fundamentals of wilderness first aid afloat, on-land role plan and practice, handling incapacitation or injury away from shore, incident management and more!
The instructor for this event will be Nancy Zane of North Star Adventures, who has 25 years of experience designing and leading outdoor adventure programs and certification courses. Her other credentials include: Wilderness EMT, Leave No Trace Master Educator, Maine Recreational Guide and Maine Sea Kayak Guide, American Heart Association First Aid & CPR Instructor, National Registry EMT-B.
There will be limit of 12 participants. SMSKN will subsidize 10% of the class fee for members, bringing the cost for SMSKN members to $45.00.
Trip Level: Novice. Participants should have experience with wet exits and re-entry.

Bring: Sea kayak, paddle, PFD, Spray skirt, lunch, and water. Dress appropriately for cold water immersion, with temps typical for mid-July in Maine. OPTIONAL: tow belt or contact tow line.
