We have arranged for Portland Paddle to teach this Rough Water Rescue Clinic. This is a great opportunity to learn and practice rescue techniques in challenging conditions. It’s also an opportunity to gain comfort paddling in rough water. The group will venture into some areas near Richmond Island where there should be breaking waves, rocky coastline and ocean swell. Instructor will build on students’ knowledge of basic rescue techniques by modeling advanced or alternative methods of rescuing paddlers in rough seas. Everyone will get plenty of opportunities to practice rescues and instructor will also help students improve their rough water boat handling.
This class normally costs $80 but Portland Paddle is offering it to SMSKN for $55/person, and SMSKN is providing another $5 off the price for members. This is for members only unless the event doesn’t fill by June 1, at which time it will be open to non-members at a higher cost. Note: a small amount of tax will be added to the fee. Class is limited to 8 participants.
Trip Level: Intermediate or advanced level. To allow everyone to have a great experience participants need to at least have basic edging and turning strokes, basic concept of bracing, solid wet exits, and have some experience with basic rescues such as the T-rescue.
Bring: Sea kayak, paddle, PFD, Spray skirt, helmet (if you don’t have one, SMSKN can loan you one, check with event organizer. Portland Paddle can also provide), cold water immersion gear suitable for water temperature, paddle float, pump, other paddling gear you might want, lunch, water, sun protection. Wetsuits or drysuits may be rented from Portland Paddle for $5 or $20 respectively. They can also provide neoprene gloves and booties at no extra charge. Your boat should be on the beach and ready to go by 9:30 a.m.
