SUMMARY:What Bird Was That?: Identifying Common Maine Seabirds
DESCRIPTION:I'm not a bird expert\, but after a lifetime on and near the wa
ter I can tell the difference between a great blue heron and a Canada Goos
e flying backward (join the meeting the see what I mean!). I'm sure some o
f you know more than I do about our fine feathered friends\, so I will enc
ourage audience comments and questions.\nIdentifying seabirds from the sea
t of a kayak can be a challenge. I have found the traditional method of bi
rd identification—spotting head\, body and wing markings—inadequate an
d frustrating. Who has time to pull out the binoculars? Instead I will pro
vide a model of identification that\, while not totally foolproof\, will g
ive you a good chance of knowing whether the bird you saw was a surf scote
r or an eider duck.\nI will stick to the most commonly seen seabirds in th
 e midcoast Maine area.
