When considering coastal paddling it’s important to know about Navigation, how to cross channels and stay safe in a group. Possessing a good efficient forward stroke is key as well, so you don’t tire out over the course of the day. We will touch on all of these topics in this one-day course.
Instruction to include:
- On-water navigation
- Efficient paddling for touring
- Group paddling dynamics and communication
- Additional topics based on student input and available teaching elements
Gear requirements:
14’+ sit-in kayak with spray skirt; strongly suggest 16’+ kayaks
- PFD
- Paddle
- Immersion-level clothing – remember, the water will still be quite chilly at the beginning of June! This means wetsuit layers at a minimum; drysuit if you have one, or some combination of the two (wetsuit pants, dry or semi-dry top). While I have no intention of us getting wet, well… stuff happens.
- Dry clothes in drybag
- Food and drink for yourself for the day – we will not be returning to the launch until the end of the programming day
- Paddle Float
- Bilge Pump
Suggested gear:
- Nautical chart #101E (https://waterproofcharts.com/product/casco-bay-to-monhegan-me-large-print-navigation-chart-101e/) or the equivalent
- Kayak deck compass
- Hiker’s handheld compass
- Spare paddle
- First Aid kit, for your level of care
- Timepiece (a watch is fine)
Optional gear:
- Tow belt
