Join SMSKN members for an active on-water navigation course through Portland Paddle, taught by Suzanne Blackburn. This course is appropriate for all skill levels, and will include land based activity as well as a significant amount of time on the water. You will learn and practice navigation skills including reading a nautical chart, plotting a course, taking and following bearings, crossing boat channels, dead reckoning, using ranges, paddling in fog and low visibility, and using a VHF radio.
The total cost for SMSKN members is $93. Portland Paddle is providing a 10% discount and SMSKN is providing an additional 30% discount, giving members a 40% discount off the regular fee of $155.
Participants are asked to bring a handheld compass and a nautical chart of Casco Bay. These items are also available for purchase at Portland Paddle. Bring your sea kayak and gear, including appropriate on water clothing lunch, snacks, and water. A deck compass is also helpful.
